Commitments of Traders

We construct, calculate and form directional market biases using various types of CoT (Commitment of Traders) reports.

There are several variations of the CoT reports including the “Legacy” reports and newer disaggregated reports that provides greater market transparency. Our CoT assessments and analysis supports all CoT report types.

The CoT report is an excellent resource to use in order to gain insight into the position sizes of different types of traders and how the position sizes change over time. The CoT data we use for our analysis includes:

    Raw data across classifications:

  • Open Interest (OI)

  • Current Long Positions

  • Current Short Positions

  • Net Long position

  • Net Short position

  • Total Long Positions

  • Total Short Positions

  • Long/Open Interest Positions

  • Short/Open Interest Positions

  • Long/Non-Spreading Open Interest Positions

  • Short/Non-Spreading Open Interest Positions

    Generated statistics:

  • Absolute change in the Number of contracts

  • Percentage change in the Number of contracts

  • Percent change in open interest represented by each category of trader

  • Percentage of Long Exposure across multiple trader classification (A)

  • Percentage of Short Exposure across multiple trader classification (B)

  • Flip = (B) – (A)

  • Net Positions over OI

  • Multi-year Net Position over OI Percentile rankings

We rely heavily on our understanding of the fundamental factors that affect price values.

Our trades are driven largely by an understanding of all things Macroeconomic (fundamental). Our economic framework and modeling underpins our trading biases.

  • Measurements of GDP, inflation, unemployment, wages and productivity growth

  • Exogenous Driver analysis

  • Relative GDP growth analysis

  • Relative Inflation growth analysis

  • Relative Balance of Payments (BOPs) and Trade analysis

  • Interest Rate Differential analysis
